The next installment:
I have now sanded the edges of the sections to glued them into place on
the fins and rudder. You want the the sections to be level with the
body tube. One tip that I did was to place a ruler on the end of the
tube and draw a line across the rudder to get that section on straight.
Now shape the Ramjet standoff using the template and sanding device. (I
had Mark do this for me and he used a small belt sander to speed up the
process.)
The Ramjets are now assembled. The edge of the stand off now gets sanded to fit the contour of the ramjet.
Both small nose cones that were cut earlier have now been sanded to fit
the contour of the main body tube. To do this I wrapped a piece of sand
paper around the body tube.
That all for now.
I think these steps were the more time consuming ones except for maybe cutting the tubes.
While your waiting while I work on some more I have uploaded more
pictures for you to enjoy and also some photos of the prototype that
Mark built and took to NSL-07.
It was in primer when we arrived and sticking with what is quickly
becoming a tradition with us, Mark proceeded to paint it a very nice
solid black gloss right there on the field.
He then flew it on a Aerotech F22-5, what we didn't know was that
instead of giving us a 5 sec. delay it wanted to surprise us with a 15
sec. delay. It was a beautiful flight, however the results were not
pretty. Mark has now fixed the damage and as you'll be able to tell on
the pics the gray/black parts are from the crashed on.
More Photos have been added to the Hawks Hobby Photo Gallery : Super Bomarc Build

After many holiday delays I'm finally getting back on track with the Super Bomarc kit. Thought I would do this thread to let all of you know how it's going.
Because of the many cuts that need to be made I have done this kit a little different. The 1st thing that I did was cut out all the templates, position them on the tubes and make the marks. Then I applied sanding sealer (fill-n-finish) to all the nose cones and fin sections and sanded.
Now comes the fun part. I cut 2 sections very carefully out of the main body tube (need to keep the cutouts), and cut the conduit tube length wise in half, this has to be as close to half as possible for later use - which means that I couldn't make any stray cuts. I then had to cut the 2 small nose cones in half from tip to rear - this was done pretty easily with a hobby knife. I then gently sanded the conduit sections and nosecone pieces to make sure that they were level.
Now comes the engine mount. Unlike most kits where you have 2 or more round centering rings with this kit you have 2 round and 2 with a flat top. You have to stager the centering rings 1 round, 1 flat, then round again, the last is the flat. In order to get the flat centering rings inline with each other and the openings of the main body tube I installed the 1st 3 rings and then inserted the engine tube into the main body tube. At this point I slid the last ring into place and glued it in - leaving the engine mount in the main tube. After the rings were dry, here comes my OOPS, as I was getting ready to glue the engine mount into place Mark realized that I had for gotten the engine hook ( this is our way of engine retention as the kit doesn't come with a engine hook so it is up to the builder how they want to retain the engine.) So this is where I go HELP. He got the engine hook installed for me with out having to tear apart or redo the engine mount. The engine mount was now glued into place.
I now assembled the fins and rudder, once these were dry I gently sanded the opening in the main body tube so that all was level and attached the fins and rudder.
That is where I'm currently at ....... More to come.
In the mean time here is some pictures of my build.

DARS Night Before Christmas
Here is a Christmas greeting that was sent to me and I thought I would share it with all of you. Hope everyone has a Happy and safe Holiday season and a Very good New Year.
Loretta
DARS NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS by James Gartrell (butchering the original by Clement Clarke Moore)
'Twas the night before Christmas, when all across the range Not a rocket was launching, it seemed sort of strange;
The rockets were stored on their displays with care, In hopes that Old Vern soon would be there;
The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of rocket flights danced in their heads;
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter's nap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Knocked over the Mega Baron and stepped on my Scortch, Moved aside my rockets and stepped out on the porch.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the luster of a Sparky motor, oh what a glow,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, powered by a Sky Ripper,
With a little old driver, from Estes we learned, I knew in a moment it must be Old Vern.
More rapid than a Roadrunner G-80 his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
"Now, Royce! now, Marissa! now, Don and Terri! On, Sam! on James! on, Tim and Cheri!
To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!"
As fast as a minimum diameter on a K-motor will fly, From the base of the launch pad, it zooms to the sky,
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of rockets and motors, and Old Vern too.
And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The spewing and spurting of nitrous oxide, poof.
As I stepped back in the house, and was turning around, Down the chimney Old Vern came with a bound.
He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of High Power and Sport Rocketry was flung over his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow;
The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath;
He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, In his hands, a Hawks Hobby Snooper for myself;
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;
He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,
And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;
He sprang to his sleigh, and switched on the relayer, And counted down to start and took off like an O-motor.
But I heard him exclaim, ere he blasted out of sight, "Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good-flight." |

Saturday we went up to McGregor for the DARS Classic Contest. We had fun and flew a couple of our rockets. Anyway we entered the classics contest Open catagory with our Super Orbital Transport (Mark), Texas Thunder ( Josh) and the Extreme Sprite ( me). Mark WON the BEST IN SHOW with the Super Orbital Transport. This was kinda funny because this was the category that we were sponsoring ... Prize a Super Solar Sailer. So Mark took home the Honor ... but we drew a name from the top 4 runners up and James Gartrell got to take home the Prize.
Congrats to everyone that entered and to everyone that won. I'll see about posting more info on the winners if I get it.

This is part of a comment that was made by Commonwealth on the Rocketry Forum and I thought I would take a minute to respond. Why respond here and not on the Forum? Well that is simple this is My area and I don't want to ruffle any feathers.
Comment: ( for full thread ) "
As far as other comments, BACK ORDERS and products not received.
Unfortunately many rocketry companies that supply us are one or
two man operations. These companies often run into supply or
delivery problems. Our fault is believing that they can deliver
and leave the items as “in stock” on our web site."
My response ( or 2 cents): Being one of Commonwealths new suppliers and also a Very small company I thought I would respond to this. They do have a point that we do run out of stock and need time to replenish. I can't speak for other companies only myself when I say that a typical order from me to one of my dealers ... with everything in stock usuall takes about 2 weeks from the time they place the order to the time they receive it. Why that long if evrything is in stock? Well 1st they place the order, then they send me the payment which usually takes about 3-7days to receive, then I ship out and that takes about another week from the time I ship to the time they receive it. Now if they place a order and I don't have all of it in stock then I may need to order supplies in order to fill the order and depending on my suppliers this could hold up the order for a couple additional weeks. However I do let them know if there is a hold up in there order.
Now how can we speed up the process and avoid the Dealers running out? Well plainly put the dealers need to place there orders before they run out of stock. And at least with me if my dealer happens to run out before they place there next order and they get a order for one of my kits I have no problem with the dealer calling me up and if I have the item in stock I will gladly ship it right out directly to their customer for them. I have already done this for one of my other dealers.
Anyway that's my 2 cents. Loretta

Hey, As mentioned in Launch Magazine the Super Mars Snooper could be an even better kit with basswood fins. I responded here that I agreed and that that change was in the works.
Well .... it's done. The Super Mars Snooper now comes with basswood fins!
The only down side is that with this up-grade to the kit the cost of the fins have doubled , soooo I had to increase the cost of the kit by $6.00.
I will be offering the basswood fins to the customers that have already gotten a kit with the balsa fins and wish to up-grade to the basswood fins.
Enjoy your day. |

I just got my copy the other day and along with other great articles and photos, there was a article that I thought was really cool.
"The Space Twins" by Mario Predue; Pages 18-20 It is a build / comparrison article between the Semroc Laser X and the Hawks Hobby Super Mars Snooper.
Needless to say I was very thrilled and honored that Launch would do an article that included one of my kits. One of the things that makes this article even more special (to me anyway) is that this was our flag ship kit - the very first one that we produced and the one that a lot of people has come to identify with us.
Anyway, along with really liking both kits which as he put it ".... both have taken a favored position in my rocket collection." and all the positive things that Mario had to say about the Super Mars Snooper (and of course the Laser X) he did point out a few things that could make the Snooper a better kit. Those things were that basswood fins would be better than the balsa that we currently use and that the instructions could use better illustrations even though they do not hinder the build as all the information is there.
(Now the cool thing about having my own blog is that I can respond to the article.) Frist off I totally agree with Mario's commets about the fins and the illustrations. Below is some info that we have been working on but of course Mario didn't have this info.
A little kit history: As I said before the Snooper was our first kit and of course as with anything the first time that you do something it may not always be as good as you want it, but you learn and get better.
Now 3 years and about a dozen kits later, I think I can honestly say that I have gotten better programs and have gotten better at doing the instructions and illustrations. To that end for the last few months in between working on NEW kits I have been redoing ALL my earlier instructions and illustrations. I have also gotten a beta tester (James Gartrell) who has given me very good input.
Back to the Snooper, We decided a few months ago that we needed to change the balsa fins to basswood fins so that change is in the process of taking place - the radiator fins will remain balsa. In the near future we will be offering a set of basswood fins to customers that have bought but not yet built there Hawks Hobby Snooper.

This is a Review as posted on EMRR by James Gartrell on 05/10/07.
"James Gartrell's review; used with written permission from EMRR" EMRR Link (Their home page)
And with permission from James Gartrell.
Brief:
I won the Super Sprite at a DARS classic kit contest. I don't remember having the small Estes original, but after
seeing Hawk's upscale fly earlier on the day of the contest, I had made my mind up to buy theirs. The flight on an
Estes E-9 is a thing of beauty! Naturally, I was one happy guy when I found out I had won the kit! It flies on 24mm
motors and recovers by parachute. A spacer is included in the kit to allow the use of either Estes D or E motors. The
rocket stands 19" tall and has a fin span of 8.5 inches.
Construction:
A 2.6" body tube, 5" x 24mm engine mount, kraft engine block, three laser-cut wood centering rings,
3.75" engine hook, balsa nose cone, a huge kraft ring fin, screw eye, Kevlar®
and 3/8" elastic shock cord combo, high-quality 24" ripstop nylon parachute, 3/16" launch lug, laser cut
balsa fin sheets, and water slide decals are provided. The shock cord was super long as I modified the way it is
installed. The instructions indicate to wrap the Kevlar®
over the motor mount between the middle and forward centering rings, passing the end through a notch in the forward
centering ring and then attaching the elastic cord to a loop at the end. I used my standard tri-fold shock cord
attachment. I love it when the manufacturers put Kevlar®
in their kits!
The instruction sheet isn't numbered but does include helpful illustrations. I left out the forward centering
ring and moved the middle centering ring to about 3 1/2" from the rear of the motor tube. I bent the upper end of
the engine hook backwards and CAed the top 2" to the motor tube, leaving about a 1/4" hanging over the rear
of the tube for motor retention and about 1 1/2" free to flex for motor insertion/removal. I slid the middle
centering ring up from the rear of the tube until it caught the hook then epoxied the hook to the centering ring. That
allows positive motor retention while not having to worry about the hook getting in the way. I also left out the engine
block, so I wouldn't be restricted on motor length. The Estes D and E engines can be friction fit. All the "small
parts" are in handy plastic bags that keep all the little things from disappearing. A fin marking guide is
supplied to properly align the fins. I had to read the instructions for attaching the fins a few times before I finally
"got it." The laser-cut fins were perfectly matched, so minimal sanding was required. The main fins fit
perfectly inside the ring fin and then the fin caps fit perfectly over the ring and on top of the main fins. I filled
in the seam lines on both the main body tube and ring fin as they were more noticeable than I would like on a finished
rocket. I also filled in the fin/ring/fin cap joints and sanded smooth.
As usual on any rocket I build, I installed a length of Kevlar®,
which was provided, in a paper shock cord attachment (not provided) with a loop at the end to attach the elastic shock
cord. To minimize abrasion from the Kevlar®
against the body tube, I soaked in CA around the top 1/2" of the body tube and tied a knot in the Kevlar®
to meet the lip of the body tube. Glue on the launch lug, install the screw eye into the nose cone (adding weight first
to compensate for the largest motor you plan to fly) and attach the shock cord and you're almost done. The parachute
was already assembled and had small grommets holding the shroud lines. It's a very nice parachute.
Finishing:
The balsa nose cone and fins require standard finishing. I used Elmer's Light Fill 'n' Finish, but any balsa filler
will work fine. I wanted to follow the paint scheme on the original Estes Sprite, shown on the back of their 1966
catalog but didn't want to use Krylon's pumpkin orange. I didn't want to hear anyone saying, "Hey, did the Great
Pumpkin finally come!" Sheesh! Geoffrey Kerbel came to my rescue though, and suggested Ace Hardware's Premium
orange enamel. It's perfect! Geoffrey suggested I provide sunglasses at the launch, though. I used white trim Monokote
at the top of the body tube and on the ring fin between the main fins. A black spot decal is used to represent the hole
in the original Sprite. Once complete, I put on a thick coat of Future floor finish on all the painted surfaces to
protect everything. It looks fantastic, if I do say so myself!
Construction Rating: 5
out of 5
Flight:
My first three flights were on the Estes E9. The first flight was with the wind blowing between 12-15mph, so I opted
for the 6 second delay. It left the pad straight as an arrow and only arced slightly into the wind, deploying the chute
just past apogee. The E9 sounded great struggling against the wind. It got some serious altitude but not so high that I
had to walk too far for recovery on the big chute. The next flight was with almost zero wind, so I chose the 8 second
delay. It flew straight up, deploying the parachute right at apogee, and came down gracefully, almost standing up at
touchdown. The third flight was with winds between 5-8 mph, but I went with the 8 second delay again. The rocket flew
arrow straight again and arched slightly into the wind during coast and deployed the parachute just past apogee. One of
the fin caps hit a rock at touchdown and dented the balsa slightly. The fourth flight was on an Aerotech F12 reload.
Liftoff was beautiful with lots of black smoke as it took off straight up. Then, boom! The motor catoed and blew the
motor mount out the top of the rocket, knocking off the nose cone and deploying the chute about 15 feet off the pad. It
came down gently though, with no other damage to the rocket. I've got to get that motor mount reinstalled so I can fly
her again! The flights really are impressive.
Recovery:
The parachute provided in this kit is perfect for gentle recovery. Very nice rip-stop nylon with sturdy shroud lines
and grommets at the attachment points on the parachute. This chute can take a lot of abuse.

Summary:
The Super Sprite is a fantastic rocket. The beauty of its flights only increases the nostalgia of the rocket.
Although all of Hawks Hobby's upscales of the Estes classics are impressive, in my book the Super Sprite is tops! Now
I've got to build that upscale Trident I won on the same day!!

In-case some of you haven't noticed the Hawks Hobby web site is going
through some changes again. I have been informed by some that it seemed
a little cluttered and for those that have dial up it is a little on
the slow side. Soooo I have been working on giving everyone a choice on
which way they want to view it ... High speed or dial up (non
cluttered). IT is up and running, just not finished yet , a lot of
distractions lately but it should be completed soon.

I would like to extend a big THANKS to MASA ( Minnesota Amateur Spacemodeler Association) for hosting it.
This was our first NARCON. Due to some family problems we missed the 1st day ( Friday) and this includes the Vendors forum, but our friend Chas Russell was there and got up on our behalf and said a few words about our company. THANKS CHAS!!!
There were about a dozen vendors present and many more that sent items for door prizes. From what I understand there were just over 180 door prizes .... of which I walked away with 2 a Quest Little Joe II Micro Maxx Set and a Semroc Hustler. We're not going to count how many kits I bought ( about a dozen or so).
The boys want to send a big THANKS to Quest for the ARIES kits that they provided for the Make it / Take it session. They really enjoyed building them.
Anyway, we had a great time and really enjoyed meeting everyone and spending time with our vendor friends. |

This is a Review as posted on EMRR by David Montgomery.
"David Montgomery's review; used with written permission from EMRR" EMRR Link (Their home page)
And with permission from David Montgomery
Brief:
The Super Mark is one of about nearly a half dozen kits Hawks Hobby has put on the market that are upscale versions
of very popular Estes classic OOP from years ago. Hawks Hobby is located in Crosby, TX which is basically a suburban
area just outside of Houston. I'm very impressed by the fantastic line up of the current kits Mark and Loretta Hawkins,
owners of Hawks Hobby, that I had to make the Super Mark my first purchase. Since the Estes Astron Mark was one of my
first model rocket back in 1969 when I got started in this great hobby, I knew owning the Super Mark would bring back
wonderful memories and add to my always growing fleet.
The Super Mark is a skill level one beginner kit, single (24 mm) stage that is designed to be recovered via
16" nylon parachute that Loretta herself makes for their kits. In addition to the specs mentioned at the beginning
of this review, the Super Mark's fin span is 6.5 inches.
After sending my money order via snail mail to Hawks Hobby, my kit arrived within a week in great
condition--maybe living in the same area helps! One other thing that struck me about this mail order is that in
addition to the kit, I received a nice Hawks Hobby ink pen with a business card size ID that gives interesting info on
the kit ordered. In addition to listing the kit's specifications, this card shows that my model is production # 0014.
Saving these tag cards could become collectors items years from now.
Finally, near the back of the instructions, Hawks Hobby has a 100% satisfaction guarantee promise. I've already
seen first hand the seriousness Mark and Loretta Hawkins take this guarantee.
Construction:
The parts list are as follows:
- 1 Nose Cone (Balsa)
- 1 Body Tube
- 1 Centering Ring Set (looks like thin but sturdy plywood)
- 1 Fin Set (Balsa, with three precision cut fins)
- 1 Engine Mount (EM-9-150)
- 1 Launch Lug (LL-320)
- 1 Screw Eye (ES-1-38)
- 1 Kevlar®
Shock Cord Anchor (KC-36)
- 1 Shock Cord (SC-36-38)
- 1 Decal (D-040)
- 1 Parachute (P-16-4-48)
- 1 Instructions (IN-040)
- 1 Black Monokote (BM-040-17)
- 1 Coupler (HTC-16)
In addition to the parts listed, you'll find a 24mm size coupler in the bag. I had a heck of a time trying to
figure out what it was for. An email to Loretta cleared the confusion--this coupler is a spacer for use inside the
engine mount when using the C11 and D12 motors. I felt like a real dummy on learning this!
As with any model rocket kit you decide to build, read through the instructions fully before beginning
construction. Additional items needed for building this model are: Fine sandpaper, a pencil, weight for balancing,
clear tape, screw for weight if using washers or other such item if needed, wood or white glue, CA, sanding sealer,
paint, and, of course, engines, wadding, and launch system.
The instructions are pretty easy to follow, however, I made several slight deviations. Before I glued the third
fin in place to the body tube, I used that fin's leading/root edge as a "pattern" for cutting the angle to
the launch lug, so the angle will be uniform. Then I glued the third fin in place followed by the launch lug once all
the joints have completely dried.
Finishing:
Since this model has plenty of balsa surfaces that needed some work, I used fine sand paper and sanding sealer to
fill in the grains and make the surfaces smooth. How much work you put into it will determine the quality of finish.
The Super Mark is suppose to be painted a gloss orange from nose to tail, but since I felt this model will be a
high performance kit for the motors it's designed to use (anyone remember the performance of Estes' original Astron
Mark?), I painted my Super Mark florescent orange to aid tracking and visibility. Using this concept came in handy on
my model's first (and to date only) flight.
The black stripe Monokote adhesive when applied properly really gives the Super Mark a sharp, classy look. A
really well done, designed up scale kit by Hawks Hobby that any rocketeer would be proud to have in his/her fleet!

Flight:
The recommended motors are C11-5, D12-7, and E9-6 (but, in the second tag card it lists the E9-8). Furthermore, I
believe this model, when using a 2050 type interchangeable motor mount, can also use 18 mm engines such as the C6-3
(and maybe a C6-5 if the model isn't too heavy after painting).
For the first flight, I decided to use the D12-5 since I was concerned that the seven second delay in the other
choice for the D12 would give the Super Mark added nose down speed after reaching apogee. This first test flight took
place at the NASA/Houston Rocket Club (#365) club launch at JSC on December 16, 2006. I also decided against using the
kit provided nylon parachute and used instead a smaller plastic parachute due to the rather windy conditions we had
(proved to be a blessing, as we will see!).
Prep is very easy and straightforward as in any standard model rocket. Using the 24mm coupler as a spacer, the
D12-5 fits very snugly with the engine clip retaining the end of the D12's casing firmly. Use enough flame proof
wadding (I used the standard Estes tissue wadding) so that you have a good seal between the engine mount and recovery
system, but not too tight. The size of this model makes it very easy to install the recovery system without difficulty.
Due to a miscommunication, my Super Mark was launched before the countdown got under way (so, we missed the first
part of the boost phase as well as didn't get any pics of the launch itself). I can say my model flew very well as
could be expected for a solid, D12 powered flight. Even with the 10-14 mph winds we had, the Super Mark flew straight
and very high.
Recovery:
The Super Mark kit uses the Kevlar®/Elastic
Shock Cord combination for the recovery system. This should help make the internal attachment of the Kevlar®
to the forward plywood centering ring permanent.
On this first test flight, the ejection occurred right after reaching apogee. However, due to either the stronger
wind (or my parachute folding technique may not have been the best), it became obvious during the descent that several
shroud lines had torn loose from the parachute. Even with this "handicap," my Super Mark still landed a
considerable distance from the launch site, which required me to walk through the JSC fields that was quite saturated
with standing water at many places (thus, both of my feet got soaked!). Imagine what would have happened had I used the
kit provided 16 inch ripstop nylon parachute! Since Mark and Loretta Hawkins arrived at the launch site shortly after
this flight, I did talk to Mark about the possibility that the Super Mark may need to be recovered via some streamer
due to its high performance to save from long chases. I would venture to say that maybe some highly visible mylar
streamer material should be sufficient for this reason. Otherwise, use of the nylon parachute should be ok on calm days
and/or at very large fields.
Flight Rating: 4
½ out of 5
Summary:
The Super Mark should be a great sport flyer and demo rocket. The next time I attempt to launch it, I will use a 2050
motor adapter and see what a C6 will do.
This is a very well designed kit with excellent quality parts that makes it a very durable, sturdy model. Having
seen what it can do with a D12, I think that's the maximum I'd rather use.
I'm excited about this kit and the others Hawks Hobby carries. Mark and Loretta are great people to know and do
business with. I encourage you to give them a try. It's obvious, from what I know from first hand experience, that Mark
and Loretta stands behind what they sell. That's the secret to putting your customers first.

We will now be carrying a couple of Quest starter sets ( Astra III ).
If interested contact me for cost and availability. ( just respond to this post or email me at
sales@hawkshobby.com)
Why are we carrying starter sets when we manufacture upscales??
We have come across some folks that like our rockets and want to get them but have never
built or flown a rocket before. So...we recommend that they get a starter set first to make sure
that they are going to like it before they spend the money on something that they may mess up
on and then loose heart in the whole hobby...plus they are going to need the launch equipement.
Anyway, they've said that they like what we have and want to deal with us so could we get the
Starter sets for them that way they get the right thing and the correct engines.

It has been brought to my attention that some of the buttons on my Our Rockets page is
either missing or in the wrong spots when using Internet Explorer. I am working on fixing this problem.
To that end I have divided the Our Rockets page into 2 pages and this has fixed most of the problems.
When using Internet Explorer the buttons for the Super Trident and Super Sprite seen to want to be to the
lower right hand side of the page ,,, I have put the names of the rockets above them .
All the buttons seem to be working on the individual rocket pages to get to these just click on the
rocket picture from the Our Rocket pages. This will work when using Internet Explorer, Netscape or Firefox.
All the buttons aeen to be in th ecorrect spot and working when using Netscape and Firefox.
Any additional problems olease let me know.
Thanks

First we want to THANK everyone who put in a entry.
Over the two days that DARS held the "Turkey Shoot" there were 29 enteries.
There were a lot of really good names ... some of them were : Fusion Contusion,
Strat-O-Spear, Shoot To Thrill, Texas Thunder, Super Hawk, Hawks Super Sport,
Color Me Gone & Zoomer- just to name a few.
With so many good names how did we pick the "ONE"? I went through all the
names first and elimated 11 of them, then asked Mark , Tony , Josh & John Dyer
( Thanks for the help John) to each pick and write down there top 2-4 names.
Out of those picked names I went through them looking for names picked the
most times, out of 8 names that they picked 3 were each written down twice,
So each of us then picked the one we liked the best out of the top three which
were: Hawks Red Tail, Texas Thunder & Super Hawk. And with 4 out of
6 votes I am happy to Announce that the Winning name
is ....... "TEXAS THUNDER" Sumitted by DARS member
George Sprague from Mesquite, Texas
Congratulations George Sprague !!!!!

Hawks Hobby Super Trident
Hello All,
First time review...
Mark & Loretta Hawks stopped in on one of our monthly club
launches, displayed their goods and it was a no brainer -- Picked up
their Super Trident and Super Cherokee and been at 'em awhile.
The Super Trident is a Skill Level 4 model styled after Estes kit K-33.
If you ever built the K-33 and were to see the Super Trident kit in
front of you, resisting it is simply futile. The 1.68x upscaled balsa
nose cones will get you first. Especially the Aft Passenger Section
Cone that measures 7.25" long. All you middle aged crazys be honest
now... When's the last time YOU ever saw a balsa nose cone that long. Huh?
The instructions are pretty good but you're building a Skill Level 4 kit so you don't need instructions. Right?
Affixing the three Storage and Supply Tubes and Fins is what makes this
a Skill Level 4 kit. Back when we built the K-33, we typically used
wood glue and getting everything to align properly took either tooling
which we kids often did not have or more often, a steady hand and keen
eye to get the subtle angular adjustments "just right" as the glue set.
Fast forward 30 years. I suppose one could use CA to tack the tubes and
fins in place followed by a heavier glue treatment. Here's where you
start listening to that little voice in your head -- Not having any
interlocking/TTW features on the Super Trident to guarantee proper
alignment and using CA seemed risky. Instead, we used 15 minute epoxy
to make the initial tacks through final fillets. With a total curing
time of something like 3 hours, we had ample time to use our keen eyes
and get the Storage/Supply Tubes and Fins aligned "just right". A gal
named Sue McMurray (sp?) once posted on the usenet to make sure and
play some good music when doing these intensive hands-on jobs so as to
better become one with their rocket. Good advice then and good advice
today.
The motor mount kit provided is a 24mm setup. If I were to build this
kit again, I'd fashion an upscaled engine hook made from either
windshield wiper blade steel or a left over aerotech clip and use it on
the Atomic Drive similar to that in the original K-33 kit. This model
flew well on an E18-4W and almost well with an F24-4W (see below).
There are reports of it handing an E30 with no problems. I believe it
can easily handle a 29mm G33 and possibly a G64 but will never know
now. Will I?
The supplied shock cord is a kevlar/elastic combo, similar to Quest,
but a bit longer. Built to the instructions, you'll have the kevlar
extending beyond the end of the tube. This is where I followed the
instructions but wished I'd relied instead upon the lessons from HPR.
Fortunately, I got a second chance and during rebuild (see second
flight, below), went to a heavier braided kevlar and bowline looped it
about 1" shy from the end of the tube. Simply a suggestion...
The supplied launch lug is for a 3/16" but a 1/4" lug made more sense for me.
The description for the Super Trident has it weighing in at 10.5
ounces. Fully sealed, primed & painted, mine came in at 15.5
ounces. There's alot of surface area on this model and it can take
several cans of spray easily...
Here are a few pictures of the maiden flight:

The flight was pretty close to perfect on an E18-4W. After all I've
been through, I don't think I'll use any less motor unless I see
somebody else get away with it.
Here are a few pictures of the second flight on an F24-4W.

The pictures don't show it but deployment was very well into the "gonna
be a lawn dart" mode. I estimate that complete chute deployment took
place somewhere around 8-16' AGL. Despite scaring the bejeezus out of
us, this proved as useful evidence that Loretta's handmade ripstop 30"
nylon chute held up nicely. While the zipper was clearly my fault, Mark
& Loretta were simply swell and sent me a long piece of coupler to
repair the 14" long zipper. She'll be ready this weekend for another
F24-4 and possibly an F39-6.
You can tell alot about people and a company on how they tend to the
little things. Working through the Super Trident, it's obvious that
Hawks really cares. Plus, they've the blessing and encouragement of
Verne Estes himself. Two good signs...
